Family Fun
In the last several years, New Orleans has worked to develop a new family appeal. That long-held idea that it’s an adults-only destination has given way to a New Orleans that has expanded to become a destination for visitors of all ages.
Major Attractions
Adults and children alike enjoy the Aquarium of the Americas and the IMAX Theatre located together at the end of Canal Street. The bus or carriage gets you to the Storyland at City Park, a wonderland park for everyone. Also, New Orleans has its own Six Flags amusement park, the Audubon Park, and the Zoological Gardens with about 1,800 animals. Plus the Louisiana Children’s Museum in the Warehouse District is top rated.
Everyone has a great time at Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World and the free ferry ride across the Mississippi to get there. They can watch artists at work on familiar Disney characters and see Mardi Gras floats from years ago to the huge ones for today’s parades.
Tours for Kids
A popular tour goes to the Honey Island Swamp, a nature preserve located south of the city. Riverboat cruises and the plantation tours are also fun for families. The Gris-Gris and haunted houses tour with the amazing stories are fun for the kids.
Where to Eat
Family friendly restaurants are found everywhere in New Orleans. You can avoid the fast food, chicken nugget places and still have a great meal. Food is on par with the best places in the city at the Red Fish Grill, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, VooDoo Barbeque, or the Gumbo Shop.
Consider Your Options
But you should be aware that some restaurants and places in New Orleans are meant to be for adults. For example, if a restaurant doesn’t offer a children’s menu, then you probably shouldn’t take your four-year-old there. And if the music club or theatre seems to offer adult-only entertainment, that’s pretty clear. Also, remember that no one under 21 years of age is permitted in Harrah’s Casino, period. |
